The end of the 23rd year.

I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve this. For my birthday I’ve had 4 meal treats plus an assortment of presents, some of which will either land me in the dentist’s clinic or make me unable to fit into the other presents. This is really rather unprecedented. Thanks for making this a really special birthday, everyone!

Sashimi set

On Friday The CG Mate, YYY, IQ156 and I had lunch at Matsuo Sushi to commemorate the end of the Geriatrics posting. I always order the sashimi set whenever I’m here. YYY and IQ156 made that my birthday treat, very kind of them.

On Saturday, QY treated me to lunch at Sakuraya at The Village Centre, which is a few minutes jog from NUS.

The Sakuraya here is a fish mart as well as an eatery. There’s a huge fridge with slabs of fish nicely wrapped up and labelled with prices, so we just chose whatever fish we wanted and got them to slice it up. I really must learn how to choose good fish.

Sashimi
We chose hotate, hamachi and maguro; would have liked to try others, but each slab of fish was already so huge. I’ll come here with more people in the future. As expected from a fish mart, the sashimi was indeed quite fresh.

Maki
Maki, just for the carbohydrates. I can’t remember the name of this maki.

Sanma sashimi
And since they were advertising their “fresh seasonal special” of sanma, we decided to try sanma sashimi. Well, I’m not very used to the inherent fishy taste of sanma, but now I know.

It was great catching up with QY. Am…sufficiently prepared mentally for surgery SIP now, haha.

Well, the birthday treats are fun, but what makes me happiest is the company. That they happen over good food is an added bonus, really. Someone asked me if I wouldn’t prefer something less transient than a meal, but I have too much clutter and baggage as it is. Got a few birthday cards too, which are the only lasting items that I do want.

On to my 24th year.

Er I think it was a variation of futomaki… with seafood haha. Sorry I was so lousy at choosing fish, will remember to ask my mum for tips next time. By the way she says to always be careful with sanma because it’s always fishy…
