Gurren Lagann 22 is awesome. The series is nearing the end, but even now new plot points are appearing. The pacing has always been tight from the start and it looks like the finale will be an explosive one. Spoilers below:

It was a moment to send all ViralXSimon fans into heaven:

Simon: Good work, Rossiu (or something along those lines)
Leeron: Words don’t cut it. I want your burning heart!
Viral: *growls* Can I kill him now?
Simon: *neutral tone* Not just yet.

(WHY DID I EVEN THINK OF IT THIS WAY. RIE I BLAME YOU.)

And not one, but TWO Lagann transformations occurred in this episode. Gurren Lagann is probably the one mecha series in recent times that blatantly disregards all laws of physics and mass conservation. And one that firmly believes in the shonen mantra, “The louder you scream, the stronger you are.”

Finally Simon got enough quality screen time. His never-say-die spirit makes me want to jump up and cheer; and his faith in Nia is really rather touching. I’m glad part of the old Nia came back this episode.

Episode 23 seems like a breather from all the angst and action of the previous episodes, as well as buildup to the final setpiece. Looking forward to it.
